Digging For Treasure!
My kids and I have been doing our devotions on the book of Proverbs. I am not sure how many of you have really gotten in to the Proverbs, but they are great. This book really teaches a person how to live their lives. I mean it was written by the wisest man in the world-King Soloman (that is before he started all his idol worship with all of his wives-I mean really how many wives can one man have, or better yet, as my husband says, who can put up with more than one. He is joking-I think). Where was I, the Proverbs talk so much about gaining wisdom, and how wisdom was there from the beginning. Before God made anything-wisdom was. I think if we took a poll, we would all have our hands raised to receive wisdom. Wisdom is a great quality, character, attribute. How though do we go about getting wisdom? The book of James says “If any man wants wisdom, he should ask of God.” Okay, so one way is to ask for it. I thought about God’s word and how full it is of every thing needed for life, so reading the word is another. I even thought spending time in God’s presence and hearing his voice-an incredible way to receive wisdom.
Today in my daily Bible reading, I read, “Men know how to mine silver and refine gold, to dig iron from the earth and melt copper from stone. Men know how to put light into darkness so that a mine shaft can be sunk into the earth, and the earth searched and its deep secrets explored. Into the black rock, shadowed by death, men descend on ropes, swinging back and forth. Men know how to obtain food from the surface of the earth, while underneath there is fire. Men know how to find sapphires and gold dust-treasures that no bird of prey can see, no eagle’s eye observe-for they are deep within the mines. No wild animal has ever walked upon those treasures; no lion has set his paw there. Men know how to tear apart flinty rocks and how to overturn the roots of mountains. They drill tunnels in the rocks and lay bare precious stones. They dam up streams of water and pan the gold. But though man can do all these things, they don’t know where to find wisdom and understanding. They not only don’t know how to get it, but, in fact, it is not found among the living.” Job 28:1-13 I thought when I read this in all of man’s ability and how we have all evolved technically, we still can’t find the one thing that is really needed to be really successful-WISDOM! I think in reading this passage of scripture, God is saying-Wisdom is like treasure that you have to dig for so deep, and if you are not willing to dig down as deep as you can possibly dig, you are not going to get it. I not only want wisdom, but I have to have it. However, whether I get it or not depends on me.
